Sustainable Hemp Clothing

Hemp clothing is made from eco-friendly bast fiber, meaning it is part of a group of fabrics cultivated from the stem of plants like jute, flax, the sting nettle and the sativa cannabis plant. Out of this list, hemp actually comes from the seeds of the sativa cannabis plant.

Now, before you think that you’re going to be stumbling around high on something besides, say, a beautiful view of the mountain you’re hiking, hemp is completely safe and has none of the psychoactive hallucinative qualities that its infamous cousin has. In fact, hemp has roots in Central Asia and ancient China, and has been used across nearly all the continents for thousands years, being used to make sails, clothing and rope.

In the production process, hemp fabric has far less environmental impact than conventional cotton. Not only does it use much less water while producing far more fiber, but hemp is also carbon negative, meaning it absorbs more carbon during its growth than what is emitted by harvesting, processing and industrial transportation equipment. Added on top of all its other benefits, hemp is a fantastic fabric that Sherpa is proud to incorporate into its outdoor clothing line.

Hemp has a multitude of benefits for clothing. It's an excellent environmentally friendly alternative to cotton that is soft-on-skin and three times stronger, and keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. It’s highly breathable, antimicrobial and moisture-wicking, helping to keep you dry and prevent sweat from sitting on your skin and causing irritation in the heat.

It’s also a UPF fabric with UV protection benefits, blocking 50% more UV rays than conventional cotton. This is great for when you’re outside for extended periods of time in the sun, especially if you’re hiking, as UV rays are stronger the higher up you go.

To top it off, hemp clothing is very durable, pilling and abrasion resistant, and doesn’t shrink or weaken in the wash. In fact, it actually softens after each wash. This means that hemp has some of the best product life available on the market, stopping you from falling into the false economy of ‘easy wear, tear and buy again’ problem of synthetic, low-grade materials. These clothes can serve you well for years and years.
