A Labor of Love, Handcrafting the Kirtipur Sweater

Each day in Kirtipur, Nepal, a small village in the shadow of the Himalayas, teams of skilled women gather to handcraft and assemble our one-of-a-kind Kirtipur Sweaters. Hand-woven on a loom and taking multiple days to create, each piece is a true labor of love.

"The Kirtipur Sweater has been an labor of love from the start," says Pema Chamatsang-Sherpa, Sherpa's Category Manager. "It was inspired by the idea of empowering the ancient skillset of knitting in Nepal and marrying it with the best innovations of modern technology. After two years of development, we are now in its fifth season and it has become an iconic piece in our collection that has come to embody our brand."

The Kirtipur Sweater, is so much more than just a thick, cozy layer with a beautiful Himalayan-inspired pattern. This ISPO (Internationale Fachmesse für Sportartikel und Sportmode, the world's largest trade fair for sporting goods and sportswear) award winning piece combines the tradition and beauty of a handcrafted 100% lambswool sweater with the modern insulating power of PrimaLoft® Black Eco.

Incredibly warm and ready for cold weather, the Kirtipur has a lined interior and plush fleece collar and hood for next-to-skin comfort. Internal and hand pockets, arm cuffs, a jacquard drawstring and a brass prayer wheel are among the finishing touches.

The small women co-ops who craft these sweaters are now instrumental to the creation of all the pieces in Sherpa’s Himalayan Heritage Collection. Meet the women behind the Kirtipur Sweater and all our handcrafted products.
