Insulation
The first down parka was patented in the US in 1936. Then Jim Whittaker wore one to top of Everest in 1963 and they quickly became the standard for mountain adventures. Many things have changed since then—fabrics are lighter and more durable, synthetic insulation has come on the scene. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a jacket that packs extreme warmth into a small package.
